After a wonderful lunch, Marc and I go outside and he lets me in on several insights to Jiaogulan. Some key points I took away with me is that this tea was officially first studied to be used as an alternative sweetener before discovering all of the amazing health qualities people have come to love- such as antioxidants, gypenosides, and adaptogens. Hey guys – sorry it took so long to get all this stuff ready for you all, but I really wanted to ensure that it was the absolute best. I did not go all the way to Thailand to get something that you could just pick up at CVS or anything (no offense CVS!..).

I have not been THIS excited about introducing a product to the world/internet/people/community since back way back in 2006 when we launched GetKombucha! (shout out to the kombuchaholics)

[I realize that there are many other people that are at this site that have no idea what I'm talking about - so you can see what I've been up to on my other site by click this Kombucha link.  At the time of writing this, the Jiaogulan herb site has just launched and it may seem a wee bit bare... but I assure you I am a real guy that LOVES health and wellness (including Jiaogulan herb tea), and more importantly helping as many people as I can to get it going with their own health and wellness -- I am an expert of NOTHING, but perhaps a student and reporter of Many]

I Sought Magical Tea, He Gave Yellow Curry

Can you imagine coming all the way from LA, riding a bike to his house in Chiang Mai, only to show up 3 hours late because I got lost on the rented bicycle – and instead of being pissed, the very first thing Marc does… is offer me the best organic lunch ever.

I am so grateful that I was able to truly experience that.  I am happy to say that the “source” is a welcoming, gracious man who also feeds you the best yellow curry and flower salad in all of Thailand.

People who drink Gynostemma Pentaphyllum tend to be happier and live longer

Gynostemma Pentaphyllum, also known as Jiaogulan is an herbaceous vine commonly found in China, southern Korea, Japan and other parts of Asia. This therapeutic vine belongs to the cucumber or gourd family, scientifically called as the Cucurbitaceae family.

Aside from its original name, it is sometimes referred to as “Southern Ginseng” because of its likeness to the chemical composition and function of ginseng. Some call it as Xiancao, which means “immortality herb”, because of its ability to grow wild and its healthy benefits.

Jiaogulan has been called many names (my favorite is magic twisting vine tea) and is accepted in both eastern and western circles as an anthropogenic herb and anti-oxidant.

As you begin to educate AND experience Jiaogulan for yourself.  You will begin to change the question from “What is Jiaogulan”, to “What Isn’t it!”.

The people living in the Guizhou Province affectionately call Jiaogulan the tea of immortality, because it is said that those that drank it (several times a day) – lived to an extremely old age and still had radiant skin and health.

Jiaogulan is sometimes called “Southern Ginseng“, for a few reasons:

1. It grows in south  China
   
2. Because of its similarity to ginseng in chemical composition and function.
   

Jiaogulan is sometimes called “Poor Man’s Ginseng“, for a few reasons too:

1. Just like above it has the similar properties of Ginseng (primarily the saponins and gypenosides)
2. It is WAY less expensive and WAY easier to prepare than Ginseng.
   

Though Jiaogulan is in Traditional Chinese Medicine… it is not mentioned to much in its history because where it was originally found grown, there was not much documentation.  Again, this is only in the beginning, as Jiaogulan is widely used now in all parts of Asia.

As you will learn from the other Jiaogulan posts, the herb can be consumed several different ways:

1. As a Jiaogulan Tea
2. As a Jiaogulan Tonic
3. As a Jiaogulan Supplement
4. As a whole food ingredient like a Jiaogulan Green Smoothie!

Japanese scientists began documenting and studying the illness-prevention qualities of Jiaogulan tea in the late seventies… they discovered qualities like:

1. saponins (that’s the bubbles that occur while pouring the hot water on the herb when preparing a jiaogulan tea)
2. trace minerals
3. amino acids
4. vitamins
5. and even Protein!
